Eagles Win Pacific Christian Athletic Conference Tournament

From February 26 – 28, West Coast Baptist College hosted the annual basketball tournament for the Pacific Christian Athletic Conference. Teams from the conference played a number of games beginning on Thursday night and ending with the Conference Championship game Saturday evening.

In its first game of the tournament on Friday evening, the West Coast Baptist Eagles defeated Southwestern College of Phoenix, AZ by a score of 75 - 64. The Eagles were led by Curtis Gordon with 24 points and Tyler Bro with 16 points and 14 rebounds. Following that game Friday evening, the other semi-final game was won by Multnomah University as they defeated league regular-season champion, Portland Bible College, 144 – 134. This set the stage for the Championship game on Saturday between Multnomah and the host WCBC Eagles.

In the final game, West Coast took an early lead and built it to a 19-point lead soon after halftime. The Lions came back in the second half and the lead had dwindled to just two points at 84 - 82. At this point, junior point guard, Danny Galdamez made three three-pointers on consecutive trips down the court and the score was soon 93 – 88. In the final minutes of the game, the Eagles hit nine out of twelve free-throws sealing the victory at 104 – 98.

In its Friday night win over Portland Bible, Multnomah had scored 27 three-pointers, so the WCBC Eagles knew they would need to play defense in the title game. The Eagles held the Lions of Multnomah to just 11 three-pointers in the win.

The Eagles were led by Galdamez and freshman Tyler Bro who each scored 26 points. The Lions were led by Nick Kamlade, conference MVP, who scored 51.

Following the game the annual conference awards were given. Junior Abram Thomas was named to the All Conference First Team and junior Danny Galdamez and senior Tommy Thorogood were chosen to the All Conference Second Team.

Coach Curt Beeson is pleased with his Eagles’ squad. After the Championship Game, he said, “I’m proud of the guys this year. It’s a great way to end the year. We overcame some adversity this year and just never backed down.” The tournament championship is the Eagles’ third tournament championship to go along with three regular-season conference championships in the six year history of the Pacific Christian Athletic Conference.
